Beco Butterfly 2 Advantages:
Removable Infant Insert – With the ERGO Baby Carrier you have to purchase an infant insert separately in order to carry a baby weighing less than 12 pounds. With the Beco Butterfly 2 the infant insert automatically comes with it, no extra purchase necessary. So you can carry a baby from 6 pounds up to 45 pounds with the Beco, and 12 pounds to 45 pounds with the ERGO.
Internal Sling – This is one of my favorite features! The internal sling allows you to secure baby inside the carrier and then handle both the carrier and baby as a single unit. In other words, if you’re wearing baby on the front of your body and you need to switch to back carry, simply take the carrier off, with baby inside, and move it to your back. With the ERGO Baby Carrier, back carry is much more difficult.
Taller carrier body, better for older babies – The Beco Butterfly 2 measures 16″ tall, whereas the ERGO only measures 13″ tall. The taller the better when it comes to older babies that need upper body support. If unsupported they tend to lean back and flail around. This throws off the wearer’s center of gravity and inevitably leads to back, neck, or shoulder pain.
Front loading straps and safety buckles – The Beco Butterfly 2 offers front adjust straps that connect the top of the carrier to the shoulder straps on each side. These straps are adjustable, and allow you to pull your baby in closer. This not only lets you kiss and snuggle all you want, but it also allows you to maintain your center of gravity. These front loading straps also offer safety buckles which take two hands to operate. This will keep curious little hands from accidentally opening them.
Less bulky – The Beco Butterfly 2 offers plenty of padding for comfort, but not so much that it feels bulky and awkward like the ERGO. It’s design is slim and sleek, much more flattering.
ERGO Baby Carrier Advantages:
Storage – The Beco Butterfly 2 has one very small pocket on the waist belt designed to hold the sleep hood when not in use. It’s open on both ends, so I wouldn’t use it for storing important things like keys or a cell phone. The ERGO offers plenty of storage. With one large zippered pocket on the front of the carrier, and a stuff pouch on top, there’s plenty of room to carry necessities.
More carrying positions – With the Beco Butterfly 2 you can only carry your little one front-facing in, and on your back. The ERGO Baby Carrier offers one more carrying position, the hip carry.
Option of crossing the straps in the back – This is one feature that I really like. With the ERGO, when you’re using the front carry position, you have the option of wearing it backpack style or crossed. This is more comfortable, and more supportive for some, including me.
Better for Nursing– It’s pretty easy to nurse while carrying in the ERGO. Simply loosen the shoulder strap, position your baby, and tighten it back up. With the Beco Butterfly 2 it’s much more difficult because there is an extra piece of fabric positioned between the wearer and baby.
The ERGO Baby Carrier is probably one of the most popular baby carriers on the market, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best. I do love the storage, and the option of using hip carry, but I don’t like the bulk and I don’t like the lack of upper body support for older babies and toddlers.
The Beco Butterfly 2 is not quite as well known, and therefore less popular. Personally, I think it’s an excellent choice, especially for those that are new to babywearing. The internal sling makes back carry a cinch, and the fact that you don’t have to pay extra for the infant insert is a huge plus. I also love the taller body and the adjustable front straps, but I wish it was easier to nurse in, and I also wish it had some storage.
