ERGO Performance Review:
What I like most about ERGO, the manufacturer that is, they are always using their customer feedback to design the next best baby carrier. I love that!
I also loved the original ERGO Baby Carrier, but I hated how heavy and bulky it was. Plus, it was hot. In fact that was the number one complaint by most of the reviewers, too bulky, and too hot, so……ERGO listened, and designed the ERGO Performance Carrier. They even took extra precaution, making sure that the outer lining was just as durable as the inner lining was cool.
In the end, even with the extra padded waist belt, and contoured shoulder straps, the ERGO Performance is still lighter than the original, in fact it’s 1/3 lighter. Another thing I love is the zippered storage pocket. It’s big enough to fit your keys, cell phone, GPS, or whatever.
Now for the negative feedback. Many complained that because the shoulder straps on the ERGO Performance aren’t as padded as the original, it’s not near as comfortable. When I checked it out at Ergobaby.com, they claim that the shoulder straps offer the same 1-inch high density premium foam padding. The difference is that the shoulder straps are contoured and wider, so the foam is spread out, as opposed to bunched up like the original. This might make a difference, but on the same note, others stated that the shoulder straps were just as comfortable. Plus, because the straps are contoured they taper in, which means they stay put. You don’t have to worry about them sliding off your shoulder.
Also, the ERGO Performance offers a chest strap, aka sternum strap. This strap is positioned higher than the one on the original, mainly because the shoulder straps are contoured. So, when you’re using the front carry position it’s great because you can reach them better. However, when using the back carry position, the chest strap is too high, almost to the point of choking you. A couple reviewers noted that they just left the strap un-clipped, and that because of the contoured shoulder straps you don’t need it when using the back carrying position.
The ERGO Performance offers front, back, and hip carry. ERGObaby recommends only using the front carry position for the first 6 months. Which basically means that you’ll have to purchase an infant insert to get as much use as possible.
As for hip carry, the ERGO Performance does not work well as a hip carrier, mainly because the shoulder straps are angled and not straight. So, if you’re mainly looking for a hip carrier, then I would NOT recommend the ERGO Performance.
So if you’re mainly looking for a lightweight, breath-able front and back baby carrier with plenty of storage, then I highly recommend the ERGO Performance. It is currently on SALE at Amazon, see the SALE price listed above.

Best Carrier on the Market!….December 5, 2011
By S.J. Bice “Mrs.Bice” (Florida)
We have tried many carriers, and this one takes the cake.
I have back problems from a rather bad car wreck several years ago, so any prolonged holding or carrying of my son causes my back to spasm. With the ERGO Performance Carrier, I am able to carry him ALL DAY without any issues. We have gone to theme parks, the zoo, parades, everywhere really. It is also easy to use for both me and my husband. Putting him on in back-carry takes some practice when you do it alone, but we always stand over the bed just in case. I use the ERGO Performance almost everyday, to walk to the store or just to soothe him while I do dishes/laundry/etc.
The ERGO Performance is the only one of my carriers that I feel comfortable with having him in back carry and not feel like I have to check everything every few minutes. He feels secure and so do I. I am so glad that we made this investment.
