So, if someone were to ask me what the best backpack child carrier was, my response would be this.
What do you intend to do with it? Are you a serious outdoor enthusiast, or are you a townie? Some backpack child carriers are designed specifically for outdoor use, while others are designed for more of an urban use. Some offer minimal storage, while others offer a ton. I like to refer to them in three different levels.
Level One – Basic Backpack Child Carrier
The basic child carrier doesn’t come with a whole lot of bells and whistles, but it’s enough to get the job done. This is the type of carrier I would recommend to someone that is NOT a serious hiker, but still enjoys the great outdoors on occasion. I frequently refer to them as urban carriers, or diaper bags on steroids. They’re perfect for short hikes, around town use, and traveling. Some even fit perfectly into an airplane over-head compartment. Here are a couple of examples:
Level Two – Full-Featured Backpack Child Carrier
The full-featured backpack child carrier comes with everything you need, including plenty of storage, and plenty of comfort for both the child and the wearer. They can be used for long, full day hikes, or a relaxing stroll down to the corner grocery store. Often times they include convenient storage pockets on the waist belt or shoulder straps, hydration pack storage, and extra comforts like mesh lining for breathability, or extra padding. This is the type of carrier I would recommend to someone that is mildly serious about their outdoor adventures. Here are a couple of examples:
Level Three – Deluxe Backpack Child Carrier
These backpack child carriers come with everything you need and more. From sunshades, to handy little mirrors that let you peek in on your little one. They usually offer the most storage space, and some even come with detachable daypacks that include convenient changing pads. This is the type of backpack child carrier I would recommend to the SERIOUS outdoor enthusiast. They’re perfect for long hikes and even over-nighters. Here are a couple of examples:
